This article from The Atlantic discusses the phenomenon of apotemnophilia: the attraction to the idea of being an amputee. Some sufferers will even go so far as to seek out surgeons who will perform amputations of healthy limbs. The same phenomenon was covered in a documentary for BBC Horizons by Filmmaker Malcolm Clark. Malcolm is not the only one to draw parallels between this extreme form of body dysmorphia and the presentation of gender dysphoria.
